Marianist PULSE

Partners in Urban Leadership, Service, and Education

PULSE is a post-graduate, servant leadership and social justice initiative sponsored by the Marianists. It is a means of sharing the Marianist Charism through energetic young adults who want to make a positive impact in our world.

PULSE volunteers make a one-year commitment to live with fellow volunteers in an under-resourced neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio. They work full-time at local nonprofit agencies, gaining valuable leadership and career skills.

The life of a PULSE volunteer includes:

  • Gathering for meals and prayer in the intentional house community.
  • Living simply alongside neighbors in the center city
  • Engaging in a weekly Marianist formation and journey alongside a spiritual mentor
  • Attaining leadership skills that further personal and professional development
  • Experiencing the impact of working for justice, social equity, and community building

To engage in the full experience, PULSE volunteers receive:

  • Professional experience in a nonprofit agency
  • Housing, groceries, utilities, and transportation
  • Healthcare benefits
  • Eligibility for federal student loan deferment
  • Monthly living stipend
  • End-of-service $5,000 pre-tax allocation

We are excited to offer professional roles in:

  • Food access and food justice
  • Sustainability and environmental justice
  • Housing insecurity and shelter outreach
  • Education, literacy and TESOL
  • Pastoral and campus ministry
  • Public health and wellbeing

PULSE was launched in 2015; the first cadre of volunteers began service in mid-2016. Our alumni are members of the diverse Marianist Family across the country. Many PULSE alumni entered graduate or medical school, continued in nonprofit work, or have accepted professional roles at Marianist high schools, universities, and retreat centers after their service year. We are excited to celebrate our 10th anniversary and community year in 2026-2027!

Applications for the 2026-2027 program year are now available. We are excited to receive applications for our 10th PULSE community!
